within the margins
Series | 2021 — ongoing
Varied techniques, collage, and sewing on paper
Varied sizes
The series and its development are still in progress

within the margins is an ongoing series that transforms overlooked remnants of the artistic process into delicate compositions of color, form, and preservation. Created from the trimmed edges and excess paper cut away from finished works, these pieces reimagine what is typically discarded, shifting attention to the beauty found within the margins. Beyond a reflection on material reuse, the series acts as a metaphor for noticing the overlooked—the quiet, often unseen details that exist in both art and daily life.

Each work is composed of fragile strips of paper, arranged intuitively and sewn onto a paper support. Rather than being glued down, the pieces are held together by careful, deliberate stitches—threads chosen to complement the composition, running through and around the paper without puncturing it. This method of attachment embraces both the delicacy of the materials and the act of visible mending, recalling the meticulous care used in preserving fragile specimens. The process allows the materials to retain their own agency, dictating the final shape of each piece rather than being forced into rigid structures. The compositions remain open-ended—some strips extending beyond the edges, others weaving into one another—preserving a sense of organic movement.

The series branches into an exploration of presence, fragility, and transformation where the often overlooked becomes central, revealing the richness that exists in what we tend to forget or simply cast aside.

PROCESS & TECHNIQUES

Each piece is composed of thin paper strips—the trimmings and excess margins from previous works—that are carefully reconfigured, layered, and sewn together rather than discarded. The process transforms overlooked materials into delicate yet structurally intricate compositions, embracing the imperfections and irregular edges of each fragment.

The works are constructed through three primary methods: vertical or horizontal alignment of strips, interwoven compositions, and layered free-form arrangements. The strips, sometimes as thin as 2mm, are arranged in sequences that highlight their individual textures and colors while forming a cohesive whole. Unlike traditional collage or glued assemblages, these paper fragments are held in place using thread-based stitching, creating a visible mending process that reinforces the fragility and resilience of the materials.

The stitches, which loop around the paper without piercing it, act as both structural support and an intentional aesthetic element. Color-matched to complement the paper fragments, the threads integrate into the compositions while emphasizing the act of preservation and care. The negative space left by uneven edges and untrimmed margins plays an essential role, allowing the works to extend beyond rigid geometric boundaries, further reinforcing the theme of finding beauty outside of perfection and within what is often overlooked.

MEDIUM & MATERIALS

  • Paper: Repurposed trimmings from other finished pieces and professional-grade printmaking paper, ensuring longevity and richness in texture.

  • Thread: Color-matched cotton and silk thread, selected for its durability and visual integration into the composition.

  • Mounting Surface: The paper strips are lightly affixed onto heavyweight archival handmade paper, providing a stable yet subtle backdrop.

SIZE

Works within this series vary, generally ranging from small intimate pieces to medium-scale works. Due to the organic nature of the materials, final dimensions are dictated by the arrangement of the repurposed strips.

EDITION & CERTIFICATION

This series consists of one-of-a-kind artworks, as each piece is uniquely composed from distinct paper remnants. No two works are identical. Each piece is hand-signed on the back of the artwork and on the frame itself and comes with a signed certificate of authenticity including an image, detailing the title, materials, and date of creation.

FRAMING & MATTING

Each work is sold unframed, allowing collectors the flexibility to frame the piece according to their preferences. However, custom framing is available upon request. The frames and mats offered are sourced in Paris but are made in Bordeaux, ensuring high-quality craftsmanship and a natural aesthetic that complements the artwork.

  • Framing is provided by a French framer based in Bordeaux, specializing in high-quality, locally crafted frames.

  • Frames are made in French Oak Wood and include glass protection.

  • Custom matting is also available upon request. Each mat extra thick and is professionally cut to order, adding an additional layer of refinement to the artwork.

  • Please note that if a custom mat is ordered, an additional 7-10 business days should be considered for handling time before shipping.

For framing or matting requests, please fill out the form here.

ARCHIVAL QUALITY

The materials used in this series are carefully selected for their archival properties, ensuring the longevity of the artwork. Archival quality means that the inks, papers, and adhesives are acid-free, lightfast, and resistant to degradation over time. This ensures that the artwork retains its vibrancy and structure for generations to come with proper care.

  • Inks are lightfast and fade-resistant, preserving the vibrancy of the pieces over time.

  • Papers are acid-free, preventing yellowing and degradation.

  • Collage elements and adhesives used are carefully selected to ensure long-term stability without compromising the integrity of the work.

ARTWORK CARE

To preserve the quality of the artwork:

  • Keep the piece out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.

  • If framing, use UV-protective glass to further safeguard pigments against environmental damage.

  • Avoid excessive humidity to protect the paper from warping.

  • Handle the artwork with clean, dry hands to prevent transferring oils to the paper surface.
